The first charter of the town of Cornelia, GA, was secured by an attorney representing the railroad, Judge Pope Barrow, and he named the town Cornelia in honor of his wife. The official date of Cornelia's incorporation was October 22, 1887. The Big Red Apple stands on the railway depot grounds in downtown Cornelia. The apple is seven feet high on a circumference of 22 feet. It weighs 5,200 pounds. Every October, Cornelia hosts the Big Red Apple Festival, featuring crafts, specialty foods, entertainment of all kinds, and an antique car show.
